IWC’s Portugieser family has its origins in the 1930s when two Portuguese agents approached the company requesting a larger-than-usual wristwatch with the precision of a pocket watch. After that, the Portugieser was made in limited batches and infrequently before a period of dormancy in the 1980s. Resurrected in 1993, it has been a mainstay in the IWC catalogue ever since and is the watch that incorporates some of the brand’s most prestigious complications, from perpetual calendars to minute repeaters, such as this model. The elegant simplicity of the dial, with its subtle Arabic numerals and small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, sits in contrast to the handsome 5240 manual-wind movement, visible through the open caseback. This is an understated and timeless classic with a much sought-after complication.

Due to age, this IWC may not fall within our typical expected tolerances for timekeeping, and is no longer suitable for use in wet environments or submersion in water. In the interests of preserving original features, utmost care has been taken to sympathetically restore this watch.
