Vans' socks are woven with the iconic checkerboard motif, first introduced in 1977 when Mr Steve Van Doren - son of brand founder Mr Paul Van Doren - noticed that teenage skaters were using black pen to colour the midsoles of their shoes in the pattern. They're knitted for a thick, ribbed handle and have plain toe caps.
