The El Primero legend is one of the great stories of 20th century watchmaking. Invented in 1969, it represented the end of an intense race between three major horological research teams to create the world's first automatic chronograph—a race that many believe it won. Having disappeared temporarily during the quartz crisis, it remains one of the most highly regarded movements in the world, continuing to use the stunning frequency of 5Hz for maximum precision. Zenith originally made the famous “Rainbow” version of the El Primero in 1997 for the French Airforce, enhancing the watch's pilot credentials. A prestigious flyback chronograph, it features a multicolour subdial designed for ease of reading in dark, infrared cockpits.
