Yohji Yamamoto

Tokyo Japan

1977

Shuffling back and forth between Tokyo and Paris, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto's illustrious design career started back in 1977 at his Tokyo debut. Since the establishment of his company, Y's Company Ltd., in 1972, Yamamoto's eye for design found home in the avant-garde, gender fluidity of garments. Inspired by the desire to dress women in men's clothing, his taste flourished in a landscape hardly any designer finds comfort in, harnessing a unique elegance that only Yamamoto dares to reach. His constant disregard of the status quo allows him to rise above the sea of designers as someone far more extraordinary, and he ha since become a favorite of many a brand to collaborate with.
