Coach began in 1941 as a family-run workshop on Manhattan's 34th Street, where six leatherworkers made wallets and billfolds by hand. Miles and Lillian Cahn joined in 1946 and bought the company in 1961; Miles developed a supple leather inspired by the worn-in feel of a baseball glove, and Bonnie Cashin, lead designer from 1962 to 1974, brought brighter colours and the silver turnlock that became the house hallmark. Stuart Vevers has been creative director since 2013, and Coach is part of Tapestry, the group formerly called Coach, Inc.
