Castañer opened its first espadrille workshop in Banyoles, in Catalonia, in 1927, driven by Luis Castañer and his cousin Tomás Serra, some of whose machines are still in use. In 1970 the family met Yves Saint Laurent, and together they made the first wedge espadrille, which has been the house signature ever since. The classic flat espadrille comes in seasonal colours and prints, for women and men, and recent collaborators have included Manolo Blahnik and Missoni.
