Samuel Slater opened Golden Bear Sportswear on San Francisco's Howard Street in 1922, making heavy coats for the longshoremen who worked the city's docks, and by the 1940s it was making leather bomber jackets too. The Winter family has run the company since Berek Winter, a Holocaust survivor who joined as a leather cutter in the 1950s, took it over, and its varsity, leather and wool jackets are still made in San Francisco.
