Panerai

Giovanni Panerai opened a watch shop on Florence's Ponte alle Grazie in 1860, and his grandson Guido made the firm a supplier of precision instruments to the Royal Italian Navy, among them Radiomir, a radium-based paste that made dials and gun sights glow. From 1935 it built large, cushion-cased diving watches for the navy's frogmen, and it only began selling to civilians in 1993. Richemont bought Panerai in 1997; the watches are now made at its manufacture in Neuchâtel.
