Issey Miyake is a Japanese fashion designer. He is known for his technology-driven clothing designs, exhibitions and fragrances. Miyake was born on April 22, 1938, in Hiroshima, Japan. In the 1960s he moved to Paris, where he began designing for Givenchy and later for Paco Rabanne. In 1970 he founded his own company, Miyake Design Studio, and soon became known for his avant-garde style and technological innovations. He debuted his first collection in New York in 1971. His garments were made out of paper and could be folded into a paper bag. In the 1980s he began to use more conventional fabrics and techniques, and he introduced a new line of clothing called A-POC in 1998. He has also designed furniture, jewelry, and other household items.
