James Purdey opened his gunmaking business near Leicester Square in 1814, and since 1883 the firm has traded from Audley House on South Audley Street in Mayfair, where its handmade shotguns and rifles are still sold. Purdey has held a Royal Warrant from every British monarch since 1878, and in 1973 it became the first London gunmaker to add shooting clothing; the range now covers men's and women's country clothing, tweeds and leather goods, led by its Field Coat. The company is part of Richemont.
